Tax and legal terms

State Conformity

State conformity is whether, and how, a state’s tax law follows a federal provision, such as the QSBS gain exclusion. A federal exclusion doesn’t necessarily determine your state tax treatment; rules vary by state, transaction, and tax year.

Example: Before relying on a QSBS exclusion, confirm the rules that apply in your state of residence at the time of sale.

Knowing the language helps you follow the conversation. Knowing what to ask is how you participate in it.

Understanding the terms is a first step. The Aligned Capital Program uses them to teach you how to evaluate a fund and prepare the questions to ask its manager.
