Tax and legal terms

AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax)

The alternative minimum tax (AMT) is a separate federal tax calculation that can change the treatment of particular items. For QSBS acquired before September 28, 2010, part of an excluded gain may be an AMT preference item. Stock acquired later is treated differently, so ask a tax adviser to apply the rules for its acquisition date.
